Ion Exchange Resins
Higher-selectivity adsorption for the PFAS that are harder to catch
We provide IX treatment as a standalone solution for suitable water matrices, or as part of a wider Chromafora treatment train.
What Ion Exchange does well
IX resins remove PFAS by exchanging ions at binding sites on the resin surface. Compared with GAC, this typically means faster treatment kinetics and higher capacity, which can improve removal of some shorter-chain PFAS compounds that conventional adsorption media struggle to capture.
Performance in landfill leachate, however, depends heavily on matrix stability. Elevated chloride concentrations – common in leachate – compete with PFAS for exchange sites, reducing capacity and accelerating breakthrough. High organic content can also foul the resin over time.
Key considerations for landfill leachate applications
Improved short-chain removal
Chloride competition
Fouling risk
Regeneration and waste
Where it fits
Polishing step
Placed after SELPAXT or flocculation, once chloride and organic loading have already been reduced, improving resin life and stability.
Standalone treatment
For simpler water matrices with lower fouling risk and a short-chain PFAS profile.
Do you want to know if IX is the right fit?
The long-term economics of Ion Exchange depend on matrix composition and resin management. Our team can evaluate your water and recommend whether ion exchange, on its own or combined with another Chromafora technology, is the most reliable route to compliance.
